FIFTEEN
Langham climbed the steps to Victoria Lombardâs flat and found the door wedged open with a cast-iron doorstop in the shape of a duck.
âHello?â he called. âVictoria?â
âMr Langham, is that you?â Her voice sounded tremulous. âDo come in.â
He entered the flat and found her seated in an armchair in the open-plan living room. She was wearing a red dress; her dark hair was dishevelled and her face pale. Dark patches, like bruises, underlined her eyes.
Before her on the coffee table was a glass tumbler and a bottle of Gordonâs gin.
Langham sat down on the sofa opposite her.
Victoria lifted a limp hand to indicate her face. âYou must forgive me, Mr Langham. I havenât had time to â¦â She gestured towards the door. âAnd I left it open as itâs such a nice day, and sometimes birds come in here. Some people think that having birds in the house brings bad luck, donât they? What do you think, Mr Langham?â
âCall me Donald,â he said, and shrugged. âIâm not superstitious.â
She reached out, took the tumbler in an unsteady hand and drank.
âIâve only just got back from the hospital. It was a rather nice place. The nurses were so kind. They gave me some wonderful medication.â She indicated a small brown vial of pills on the table beside the gin.
âDo you think it wise,â he said, âdrinking on top of the medication?â
She blinked at him and he wondered if this was her first glass. âThey said that a little drink wouldnât harm me, Mr Langham. Just one little drink.â
âWell, just as long as it is only one, and a little one,â he went on, feeling like a nursemaid. âYou wanted to see me?â
âI just wanted to ask how the investigation was proceeding, Mr Langham. I mean Donald.â She hesitated. âI was thinking, while I was in hospital ⦠Could what happened ⦠could it have had anything to do with Nigelâs gambling debts?â
âWe considered, and pretty much discounted, that possibility,â he said.
She leaned forward and said, almost despairingly, âI just want to know who killed my brother.â
âIâm attempting to build up a comprehensive picture of the kind of man your brother was. Iâm trying to trace his friends and acquaintances. Iâve already spoken to people up in Herefordshireââ
âNigel was a kind and gentle man,â she interrupted. âUnlike Christopher. They were very, very different. Nigel wouldnât harm anybody.â
âMeaning that Christopher might?â
She shrugged. âGiven the right conditions, I wouldnât put anything past Christopher.â
âI understand that Nigel was married briefly. Do you happen to be in contact with his former wife, or with any of his recent girlfriends?â
She peered down at the glass in her hand, considering the question. âI met his wife a few times. This was seven or eight years ago. A mousy little thing. Audrey, I think she was called. But they werenât together for long and Iâve no idea where she might be now.â
âDo you know if he was seeing anyone more recently?â
She shook her head. âHe never told me about anyone, but then he was secretive when it came to that side of his life.
